Racks Connection

Each producer has patented his join between upright and beam and each system upright+beam+connector has very specific peculiarities in terms of:

  • payload;
  • performance counter forces acting in a horizontal longitudinal (earthquake, automation, impact);
  • performance counter forces acting in a horizontal direction transverse (earthquake, automation, impact);
  • held to release towards up;
  • strength of the beam front (deformation / breakout / release after a collision with the fork lift truck);
  • higher ductility of beam connector than upright so that, in case of failure, deforms the connector and not the upright;

Until now the rules at both European (FEM, ISO), and at national level (UNI, AcaiCisi), have forced manufacturers of shelving to declare and demonstrate the materials certifications for the structural elements and the computing systems used to declare the payload, as well as to deposit the calculations of schedules payload in static condition.


The peculiarities of the joints (but also of the bases to connect the ground, spacers and upright diagonals join) instead were not normed. Each manufacturer performs to his own conscience and discretion studies and evidence to that effect inside or through external laboratories. Typically this activity must to be done befor start the production, because to change the connection system after selling thousands of tons of shelves, may cause the incompatibility between new and old series and this inrease time and price of supplies spare parts or, worse, CAN NOT MORE TO SUPPLY THE PARTS OF OLD SERIES.


Some of these characteristics directly affect the payload of the system and, if each seller has carefully following payload schedules and the guidelines of the manufacturer, the user can evaluate the relationship between price and performance to choose the supplier.


Some of these peculiarities however no direct influence on the scope but really exist and can therefore represent the real difference between the different systems.


In self-supporting and seismic verified warehouses, the Engineering Office of the manufacturer is obliged to take into account all the elements that contribute to the performance of plant in static and dynamic conditions (forces transmitted by any automations connected to the shelf and accidental overloads and pressures due to snow load and wind where warehouse is installed outside (self-supporting wh) also if adjacent to other buildings.


In case of crash and/or failure to maintain dimensional tolerances of automatic systems, the buyer will once again protected by the Engineer who signed the technical report or the most complete and comprehensive, but also expensive, calculation report (static verify).


In static systems, which represent the vast majority of installations daily, the buyer who has no competence in mechanics that empower them to appreciate some constructive differences, can only trust their intuition and the references concerning the market to choose their supplier.

Another buyer's trouble is to find down the manufacturer of his racks that had acquired many years before to asking for checks, upgrade or extensions. So I decided to share the pictures of the connections that I find during my site surveys.
